Some Viruses such as the Cold Sore or Herpes Virus are with the body generally for life once contracted but they are opportunistic that is they will lie dormant and cause us no real problem if the body’s defenses are strong, but with today’s western diet and lifestyle the Immune system can become weak and confused .
As a Naturopath I have found that the largest cause of Herpes OB , other Viral Flare Ups, and infections due to Immunity problems is overgrowth of the Candida Fungus in the body you may have heard of candida treatments before or even tried them with little or no success this is because most diets or treatments may only work in the short term and can even make symptoms worse in the long term.
Candida overgrowth and the immune system.
Intestinal mucous membrane changes and defective intestinal flora are known as Dysbiosis .
The intestinal flora, comprising some billions of bacteria, forms a fine film on the inside of the intestines.
Many nutrients must pass through this flora, which alters and filters food. This bacterial colonization has grown up along with evolution, and has, adapted itself to the interests of the body as a whole.
When the intestinal flora are not intact, e.g. due to treatment with antibiotics, ingestion of food high in cane sugar or food treated with antibiotics , then the intestinal mucous membrane's absorptive abilities become impaired and Leaky Gut Syndrome can develop.
If Candida overgrows and escapes through the gut this can cause immune system problems because outside the gut Candida can put out receptors on its cell surface which are actually human receptors for connective tissue and the immune system.
Candida also releases many toxins into the blood stream which may further weaken the body’s defense against herpes, other viruses and bacteria.
I have found that by building up the immune system by controlling candida overgrowth the body can then keep annoying viruses suppressed and herpes flare ups may become few and far between if they do occur in times of high stress of other illness symptoms are far less serious and recovery is faster.
There are new viral drugs available now that can keep the herpes virus suppressed but they only work while you are taking them on a daily basis, they give some relief and may be good as a short term solution they also have some nasty side effects and may further weaken the immune system in the long run leading to other infections, it must be better to build up the body’s defenses and get long term results.
I believe until the body is candida overgrowth free, it can never reach its full potential on any level, most treatments for candida overgrowth especially the conventional western ones will only work for a short time and may worsen symptoms in the long term, controlling candida overgrowth may reduce herpes flare ups and the contraction of colds and flu.

Virus (from the Latin virus meaning toxin or poison) is an infectious agent that is unable to grow or reproduce outside a host cell.
Some consider them non-living as they do not meet all the criteria of the definition of life. For example, unlike most organisms, viruses do not have cells. However, viruses have genes and evolve by natural selection. They have been described as organisms at the edge of life. Viral infections usually results in disease and, in animal hosts, an immune response. Often, the virus is completely eliminated by the immune system. In comparison with antibiotics (which have no effect on viruses) antiviral drugs are generally more specific and more expensive. For some serious viral diseases vaccines, which can produce lifelong immunity, have been developed.

HSV
Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 genital herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are two strains of the herpes virus family, Herpesviridae, which cause infections in humans. HSV-1 and 2 are also referred to as Human Herpes Virus 1 and 2 (HHV-1 and HHV-2). After an initial, or primary, infection, HSV establishes latency, during which the virus is present in the cell bodies of nerves which innervate the area of original outbreak. During reactivation, the virus is produced in the cell and transported outwardly via the nerve cell's axon to the skin.[2] The ability of HSV to become latent leads to the chronic nature of Herpes infection; after the initial infection subsides, Herpes symptoms may periodically recur in the form of outbreaks of herpetic sores near the site of original infection.
Herpes infections are marked by painful, watery blisters in the skin or mucous membranes (such as the mouth or lips) or on the genitals, genital herpes. The blisters resemble those seen in chickenpox— an infection caused by a third member of the alpha-Herpesviridae subfamily, Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), also known as Human Herpes Virus 3 (HHV-3). Lesions heal with a crudescent scab, the hallmark of herpetic disease. Herpes is contagious if the carrier is producing and releasing ("shedding") virus. This is particularly likely during an outbreak, although individuals may shed virus between outbreaks. Although no cure is yet available, treatments exist which reduce the likelihood of viral shedding these antiviral drugs are generally specific and expensive

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious disease that is caused by the influenza virus. It attacks the respiratory tract in humans (nose, throat, and lungs). The flu is different from a cold which is usually a bacterial infection. Influenza usually comes on suddenly and may include many symptoms.
